My acer aspire one d255 freezes upon login how can I fix this?

when i type in my password and go to the desktop it usually freezes automatically sometimes it will let me open IE but then it will freeze shortly after. I have heard it may be a BIOS problem but I cant check it or go to acer.com to try and download an update because my system freezes. I bought this computer in November of 2010.
