DVD drive wont read music cds?

I have a new acer laptop (Acer Aspire 5251 with windows 7 and all that jazz) and lately the disc drive is acting up..it will play DVD's great even ones that are scratched to hell. but for the love of it, it will not read a music cd that has no scratches...i dont understand it and i hope someone here can help..When i put a dvd in it loads up and starts playing..but when i put a music cd in it boots up in windows media player and loads who it is by and all that but it will either have a hard time playing it (lots of static) , look like its playing but theres no sound or just not read the disc at all (this is from3 different attempts with the same cd. im just hoping my drive isnt going out...let me know if you have a answer for this issue...thanks! and this happens with all cds.
